Such a nice, quiet inn with rooms. Beautifully clean and comfortable my only comment would be to mind your head and watch your step at times as it is an old building.
Food was super with a great use of locally sourced produce. Breakfast substantial with lots of choice plus good value.
Very convenient location, just on the edge of the main town area, so you can access shops and Hay castle very easily plus there is dedicated parking. Well worth a stop over.
Sunday Lunch - for vegetarians
Very quick to respond with booking request and accommodated on the same day. I am vegetarian and the sunday lunch options were substandard by comparison to what my meat eating counterpart was offered - for the same price. The only offer was a bland mushroom risotto and the pork roast dinner was immense by comparison - what happened to a nut roast or a vegetable wellington! I attach photos for comparison.
My advice - either do not offer vegetarian food, charge half price for it (as it is much cheaper to make) or make it better (which would be very easy to do). Also restaurants time and time again serve the same or smaller potions of vegetarian food than meat/fish - the calorific content of vegetables is much less than meat/fish and therefore much more vegetable is needed! Please think about this! Case in point with the whitebait portion vs the soup!
We made a last minute booking and we’re so glad that we did! We managed to get a table for 2 a few hours before due to a cancellation. A very kind lady informed us that we wouldn’t be able to order food until 8.15pm but we were welcome to come earlier for a drink, which we did. From start to finish the attentive staff managed our expectations and also accommodated some special requests from my wife. The gentleman behind the bar was very polite on arrival, throughout the meal and when we were leaving. In terms of food, we had the Ham Hock and Tomato Salad to start and the Mushroom Gnocchi and Lamb for main. The food in general was lovely. The lamb was cooked perfectly! Overall, a very enjoyable experience and I’d highly recommend.

Have just had supper at The Old Black Lion and what a treat. The ambience and welcome took the chill off a cold October evening, the food was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious, the service was friendly and efficient, just as it should be. My dairy and gluten free needs were not a problem and I can't wait to come back on our next visit to Hay.
We only went for lunch, so I can't comment on the rooms, but as a restaurant this place is fantastic. We ended up getting a full 3 course meal, with several items recommended by a member of staff. There was nothing we ate that wasn't impressive. Whilst it's a fairly gourmet restaurant (i.e. portion sizes are slightly small), we didn't come away feeling underfed or disappointed.
